The history of Sunday School |
The tradition of Sunday School in the Coptic Orthodox Church has been a pillar of our faith journey for many generations. Although the formal concept of Sunday Schools as we understand it today was established in the 19th century, the essence of religious education for children and young people has always been at the heart of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Archdeacon Habib Girgis established our first official Sunday School in 1900, marking a significant era of religious revitalization within our Church. His emphasis on the value of Christian education brought forth a spiritual awakening, reinforcing the importance of Sunday Schools in nurturing our children's faith.
Today, Sunday Schools continue to play an essential role within our Church community. They provide a nurturing environment to imbue our youth with our faith's teachings and values, helping them connect with their heritage and identity and preparing them to become active participants in our spiritual community. Through Sunday School, the timeless wisdom of our faith is passed down from generation to generation, ensuring the preservation and flourishing of our cherished Coptic Orthodox tradition.
